Have a Say in What You Hear
by Aaron Smith on Monday, June 9 2008We recently stumbled across an interesting post titled, "How you can help evaluate speech synthesis systems" from the Langauge Log blog. It discusses the only "regular speech synthesis evaluation campaign" where you listen to various samples from various speech synthesizer creators, and vote on the ones that appeal to you most.
The kicker is that the site may not be all that accessible if you don't have an accessible media player plugin. Using the Windows Media player, you can get each sample's play button if you turn on AutoSpeak Tooltips, and move through the page (using Next/Previous Clip) until you find the play button. But even then, it's quite a bit of work.
There are other ways to make a more accessible interface for listening to and rating samples. If you're serious about providing your feedback, I would suggest contacting Geoffrey K. Pullum (the author of the post), and letting him know.
