Be Wary of Vista "Capable" Machines
by Aaron Smith on Monday, March 12 2007We have several laptops that came Vista "Ready," with Vista installed, and they're working flawlessly with Window-Eyes. We have one, however, from Toshiba (the Satellite P100-ST1071) that was only Vista "Capable." After many weeks of poking and prodding, trying to get the thing to behave, I'm now referring to it as Vista Contemptible. The machine didn't come with Vista installed, but rather with XP, and it boasted a shiny little sticker indicating that it might, maybe, possibly, could support a Vista installation. But Toshiba's lack of all-encompassing drivers make getting the laptop running stable an elusive task. We've been able to hack together drivers from here and there, but it makes for an unreliable testing environment. The phrase "Vista Capable" is very misleading IMHO. They ought to just call them "We think they might work, but we can't guarantee it" machines. So if you're in the market for a new laptop, and are thinking of running Vista sometime in the future, either bite the bullet and go with Vista now, or make sure that the machine you purchase is more than just capable of running Vista.
