Where do you find funding to purchase AT?
by Jeremy Curry on Tuesday, May 1 2012As every person who requires assistive technology (AT) knows, it is typically expensive. Pricing is a function of a small marketplace and a high cost for research and development to provide the best possible assistive technology.
When possible, GW Micro has taken the approach to allow our customers to pay over a period of time via such innovative programs as the Window-Eyes payment plan (www.gwmicro.com/paymentplan). However, this is not always possible for all types of AT. As many people know, funding can often be obtained from the local Lion's club, vocational rehabilitation offices, or other various non-profit and government agencies. There are many other options that are not as well known. The Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) has put together an excellent resource about where to find funding for AT called the ATIA Funding Resources Guide. This guide can be accessed by going to the following link: http://www.atia.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=4219.
The ATIA Funding Resources Guide provides a great wealth of information, but there are may be funding sources that are not noted in the guide. Do you know of an AT funding source that is not in the guide? If so, make sure to post it in a comment below so that everyone who requires AT can access the funding source. After all, the more information we can all share about where to find AT funding, the easier it will be to obtain the AT equipment you need.
