    I'm clapping at this article.

    Well done!

Isn't it funny that we don't often hear the full story behind these things.

Any JFW people reading this, try Window eyes 7.1. you'll be bloody impressed! the script central stuff is incredibly impressive.

    Well done again.

You forgot to mention that FS also sells braille displays, this is an overt atemtt to stifle competition in the braille display market while trying to garner good publicity for being "secure". I think some big government agency should start an investigation of this.

I definitely agree that an official investigation is in order here. It will be very interesting to see how this one plays out. On a somewhat related note, I'm thinking of removing JFW from the computer at my parents' house. I've arrived at this decision based on the fact that the computer in question has been very sluggish for a long time.

Couldn't agree more, this is an obvious tactic to increase their monopoly in the Braille display market. I'd take their claims of "security" more seriously if:
    1. Their mirror driver was signed.
    2. An infinite loop in a jaws script couldn't bring down the computer, which it very well can. I might add that the infinite loop is hardly the only scripting error that can grind the system to a halt, just the most obvious one.
Until then, their claim of increased security is utter nonsense. An official investigation would be a very good thing, anyone know how to actually get one started, meaning that the DOJ's anti-trust division will actually look into it instead of just throwing the issue aside?

Thanks, Doug, for definitively closing this one up.

The podcast of Freedom Scientific, FSCast, has more information about this initiative in the recently-released Episode 34, September 2009. Some of the items covered explicitly answer to this blog posting.

    Hi,
If this keeps up I will removemy jaws demo and switch to NVDA and system access to go as I cannot afford window-eyes or a mac at this time. NVDA uses brltty for its braille display support. Also if Voc rehab doesn't buy me mobilespeak pocket and mobile geo I'll go back to using loadstone gps which is free with my symbian nokia e51 or n70 phone.

I upgraded my personal copy of JAWS to version 11 and discovered they no longer support my Braille display on serial. They didn't support it on parallel in version 10, and now they ONLY support the PowerBraille in parallel in version 11. I own three 40-cell models at home, and an 80-cell model at work.

I am very grumppy because I don't have PCS with parallel ports, and the USB-to-parallel converters probably won't work, because Braille displays use more lines than are usually supported for traditional printers.

Their officious tech support was not helpful and could only tell me they don't support USB to serial or USB to parallel converters at all. However, I've never had trouble using a usb-to-serial converter of any make with any serial port Braille display.

What made this all even more annoying is that none of this was documented, so I wasted hours troubleshooting a problem that they caused.

I am asking for my money back and switching to WindowEyes at home, if they don't provide a resolution.

This decision was politically and not technically motivated since they still have superb serial support for the Braille Lite. If you buy some device from Freedom Scientific today, they have already demonstrated their lack of commitment to support it in the future!

I think they are just trying to force agencies to buy some of their newer Braille devices, but alienating dedicated customers is not the way to do it. I have used JAWS since 1994, and never pirated it nor showed anyone else how to do so either. I estimate I've spent $2,800 of my own money keeping JAWS current, and their lack of return loyalty is deeply disappointing!

*** Feel free to distribute this widely, I don't want them to get away with this blatant disregard for customers!!! ***
