Definition
The Acronym and Abbreviation elements allow web page authors to indicate occurrences of abbreviations and acronyms. Acronyms are words formed from the first letters of each of the parts of the term (i.e. NATO, radar). Abbreviations are shortened forms of words (i.e. amt, lb).
Navigation
There are no specific navigation keys for acronyms or abbreviations.
Verbosity
| • | Include Type – This option will notify the user of the type of acronym or abbreviation used on a given element. For example, if the user navigates to an abbreviation element of WWW, Window-Eyes will announce, "Abbreviation WWW." |
| • | Expand – This option will notify the user of the expanded form of the acronym or abbreviation designated by the web page author, as well as the acronym or abbreviation itself. For example, if the user navigates to an abbreviation element of WWW, and the web page author has designated the abbreviation text to be World Wide Web, Window-Eyes will announce, "Abbreviation World Wide Web WWW." |
| • | Replace – This option will replace the acronym or abbreviation element with the text specified by the web page author. For example, if the user navigates to an acronym element of NASA, and the web page author has designated the acronym text to be National Aeronautics Space Administration, Window-Eyes will announce, "National Aeronautics Space Administration" in place of the acronym element. |
| • | Do Not Indicate – This option will disable any notification of acronym and abbreviation elements, and will not indicate or replace text designated for the acronym or abbreviation by the web page author. |
