Introduction to SocialEyes This tutorial will provide an introduction to SocialEyes, a simple to use and fully accessible Facebook client for Windows that is compatible with Window-Eyes and other popular screen readers. SocialEyes offers Facebook users the ability to access their newsfeed, read comments, create comments, like posts, search for events, pages, friends, groups, and more. Users can also read notifications, messages, chat with their friends, write on timelines, manage friend requests, and access event information. SocialEyes even has the ability to attach links, photos, or videos to status updates. SocialEyes also provides additional features, such as custom notification sounds, and message filtering, all designed to help you stay in touch with all of your Facebook friends. For this tutorial, I will be using a Windows 7 computer running Window-Eyes 8.2. After downloading, installing and activating SocialEyes, the next step is to log in to Facebook with SocialEyes. Complete the following steps to log in to Facebook with SocialEyes: 1. Open SocialEyes by selecting the program's desktop shortcut and press Enter. 2. Activate the Login button and a window will open that displays a webpage containing two edit boxes (the first for your email or phone and the second for your password), a check box (to keep you logged in to SocialEyes) followed by a Log In button. 3. If you have a Facebook account, navigate to the first edit box (Email or Phone) and type in your email address or phone number associated with your Facebook account. 4. Navigate to the second edit box (Password) and type in your Facebook password. 5. If you want to have your email and password remembered on the SocialEyes login webpage, check the Keep me logged in to SocialEyes checkbox and then activate the Log In button. 6. If you are prompted to allow SocialEyes to post to your friends or complete other Facebook's tasks, choose Okay to set the appropriate permissions for the application. Note: If you do not have a Facebook account, you will need to create one before you can log in to Facebook. To create a Facebook account, activate the Sign up for Facebook link that follows the Log In button and complete the provided webpage form. After logging in, you are presented with the SocialEyes main window and user interface. Initial focus is placed in the Status List. I can use the Up and Down arrow keys to navigate the posts and status messages. When a post is selected, Window-Eyes reads the name of the poster, the text of the post, the number of likes, comments, the time of the last update and the application used to post the message. Pressing the Application key on a post opens a context menu with additional options (Open, Like, Delete, Review Status, Links, Filter App, Filter Name, and Filter Keyword). I can also press Enter to open the post in a separate dialog where I have the ability to read the message, review comments, like the post, like comments or make a comment of my own about the post. I am going to like a friend's post right from the Status List using the context menu and then I will add a comment to another post after opening it. Here is a post from Aaron stating that he made it home safely from vacation. I will now press the Application key to open the context menu. No, I will press the down arrow once to select Like and press Enter to complete the process of Liking the post. Alright, now I will add a comment to another post in my Status List. Here is a post from Newsreel Magazine indicating that some people are having problems downloading their July edition from the website. I will press Enter to open the post in a separate dialog. Now, I will Tab until I reach the Add Comment button and activate it by pressing Spacebar. I will type in my comment in the provided edit box. Next, I will Tab to the Add button and press Spacebar to activate it. Let's close the dialog by pressing ESC and I am back in the Status List in the main SocialEyes window. Next, let's try to chat with one of our Facebook friends. I will press Tab from the Status List and I land in the Friend's list. I will select Stephen Clower from the list by pressing down arrow until I reach his name and then I will press the Application key to open the context menu. I press down arrow until Chat is selected followed by Enter to open the Chat window. Now, I can type my message and press Enter to send the message to Stephen. Once the message is sent, it is spoken automatically. When the other person is typing, you will hear the typing indicator and then the message will be spoken once it is received. You can use your Tab key to navigate from the message edit area to the message history where you can review the conversation. Press ESC to close the Chat window and you will return to the Friends list in the SocialEyes main window. For our final exercise, let's post a Status Update for all of our Facebook friends to read. Pressing Tab from the Friend's List will place your focus in the Status Update edit box. I will now type my status update: "Hello Facebook friends, I hope you have a great holiday!" Pressing Tab from the edit box places focus in the Privacy combo box which can be used to control who will see this message. I will arrow up to All Friends and then Tab to the Post button and press Spacebar to activate the button and post the status update. If you want to include a link, photo or video in your status update, press Control-N and use the Attach menu in the Post dialog. In addition to the Status List, Friends List and Update Status area, the SocialEyes main window also includes a menu bar towards the top and a status bar at the bottom. You can access the SocialEyes menu bar by pressing Alt. The menu bar has four menus: File, View, Tools and Help. The File menu gives you options for creating a new post, logging in and out and closing the program. The View menu gives you access to the Find dialog (Control-F) as well as a number of other Facebook features including: Events, Friend Requests, Messages, Notifications, Timeline, Groups and Likes. The Tools menu offers access to the Options dialog that can be used to customize all of your SocialEyes settings. The Help menu provides access to the SocialEyes documentation, activate/deactivate and, check for update functions as well as the About dialog that includes the current program version and activation information. At the very bottom of the SocialEyes main window is the status bar. The status bar lists the name of the logged in user followed by the number of unread notifications, messages, friend requests as well as the number of upcoming events. You can read the status line with Window-Eyes by pressing Control-Insert-S. This concludes the introduction to and demonstration of SocialEyes. There are many more features to explore in SocialEyes but we hope that this tutorial will help you learn how to navigate the program's user interface and complete the most common tasks including reading status updates, chatting with friends and posting status updates.
