GWKB1114 : Using RFB&D with the BookSense

Product: BookSense
Category: Guide
Author: Jeremy Curry
Date Added: 01/11/2010
Last Modified: 01/25/2010

This Knowledge Base article applies to both the standard BookSense (ruby red) and the BookSense XT (off white) using firmware version 2.0 or newer.

The BookSense supports playback of content, such as audio books, from the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D).

To do this, you must:

  • Register to be an active user of RFB&D
  • Add the BookSense player to your RFB&D account so that it can be authorized to play RFB&D books
  • Download and install the RFB&D Download Manager
  • Download a book from the RFB&D web site
  • Transfer the book to the BookSense

Registering for RFB&D Service

Go to http://www.rfbd.org. Once there, if you are not currently a member of RFB&D, activate the Become a Member link to complete the online application process. You may also contact RFB&D Member Services directly to activate your account by calling  1-800-221-4792  1-800-221-4792 . Neither GW Micro, its dealers, or its affiliates have any control in determining the status or your approval of your application.

Adding the BookSense Player

You must add your BookSense for use with RFB&D books before you can play RFB&D content. You will need to do this after you have activated your RFB&D account. The first step is to login to your account at http://www.rfbd.org. After you have logged in, activate the My Account link. After you have activated the My Account link, you will then need to activate the Authorize a DAISY Player link. You will then be taken to a new webpage where you are presented with a combo box consisting of all of the DAISY players that RFB&D supports. Open the combo box with ALT-DOWN ARROW, and then press the DOWN ARROW until you navigate to "GW Micro BookSense-BookSense XT." Then, TAB to the Continue button and press ENTER.

To play RFB&D books, you will need a User Authorization Key (UAK). The UAK is unique to your BookSense and is generated depending on the key number in your BookSense. After you pressed ENTER on the Continue button as noted above, you are asked for your player's key number. To find the key number on your BookSense, do the following:

1. Press the Menu button
2. Press the UP ARROW until you hear Global Options
3. Press the RIGHT ARROW
4. Press the DOWN ARROW until you hear "Check System Status"
5. Press the RIGHT ARROW
6. Press the DOWN ARROW until you hear the key number

This is the number you should enter into the edit box. However, the number of digits in each key number can vary. For example, you might have a key number of 1 or a key number of 1,000. The key number is different for each BookSense, so you will have a different key number than every other BookSense customer. After you have entered the key number, TAB to the Continue button, and press ENTER.

You are taken to a new webpage with a link to your UAK. For example, the link may look like this: I259433_BOOKSENSE-BOOKSENSE XT_0000000001.ZIP. To install the UAK, do the following:

To install the UAK:

  1. Save the zip file to your PC
  2. Insert the SD flash memory card into the BookSense, connect your BookSense to the PC via the USB cable, and then turn it on.
  3. Extract (unzip) all the files into the root of the SD card.
  4. Disconnect the BookSense from the PC.
  5. Turn off the BookSense.
  6. Turn on the BookSense.
  7. It will then prompt you for your 4 digit RFB&D PIN. The PIN is 7323. Enter it as requested, and then press the green OK button, which is in the same spot as the pound (#) key on a telephone keypad. You will hear a message that your BookSense will now be authorized to play the AudioPlus books.
  8. Download and install the RFB&D Download Manager

Download and Install the RFB&D Download Manager

Before you can download books, you must download the RFB&D Download Manager. Assuming you are still at the webpage that contained the link to your UAK, you can activate the My Downloads link. If you have closed your web browser, or if you are at a different webpage, you will need to login, and then activate the My Downloads link. After you activate the link, you will be taken to a new webpage that will provide you with a link to the RFB&D Download Manager software. At the time of the writing of this article, the link is https://custhub.rfbd.org/Download/RFBDDownloadManager.exe. However, you should review the My Downloads webpage and install the latest version of the RFB&D Download Manager. You should run the file, and follow the prompts. If you have issues installing the RFB&D Download Manager on your PC, you should contact RFB&D for technical support. Once you have successfully downloaded and installed the RFB&D Download Manager, you are ready to start downloading books.

Downloading a Book

In order to download a book, you must first find the book you want to download. You can search for books in the RFB&D Book Catalog by activating the Book Catalog link. You will then be able to search for the book you want by following the prompts on the webpage.

Once you finalize your order, you will need to activate the My Downloads link. If the order has been successfully processed, you will see all of your books listed on the webpage. To begin downloading the book, activate the Download link. Do not select to save the book. Instead, select Open in the dialog that displays. The RFB&D Download Manager will open and begin downloading all of the parts of the book. For help using the RFB&D Download Manager, you should contact RFB&D.

Transferring the Book to the BookSense

Since each RFB&D book is made up of various files, they must all be self-contained in their own folder. It's a good idea to name the folders the same name as the book to keep things easy to manage.

  1. Once the books have been downloaded, they are automatically unzipped and placed in a folder within the Documents or My Documents (depending on your operating system) folder called RFBD Media Files.
  2. Connect the BookSense to your PC.
  3. Copy the folder to the clip board with "CONTROL-C" and paste it into the \DAISY\RFBD folder on either the BookSense flashdisk (XT only) or SD card by pressing "CONTROL-V".
  4. Once the files have been pasted, disconnect the BookSense from your PC.

Once you are ready to read the book, navigate to the DAISY Player on the BookSense. Then, press the DOWN ARROW until you get to the RFB&D folder. Press the RIGHT ARROW to open the folder. DOWN ARROW to the book you want to play. Then, press the RIGHT ARROW until you hear the book title with the narrator's voice. Press the Play button to begin playing the book.
