GW Micro - Support - Knowledge Base - GWKB1108GWKB1108 : Navigating In The BookSenseProduct: BookSenseCategory: Guide Author: Raul Gallegos Date Added: 08/06/2009 Last Modified: 04/05/2010 This Knowledge Base article applies to both the standard BookSense (ruby red) and the BookSense XT (off white) using firmware version 2.1 or newer. You should be familiar with the names and locations of all the buttons. For an overview, please refer to the quick start guide for the BookSense located in knowledge base article 1102. The topics discussed in this article are how to browse the files and folders, how to navigate while reading or playing a file, and how to use the menus to make changes. After the explanation of each, some examples may be given. This article assumes you have already copied some content to the BookSense to work with. Browsing Files And FoldersThe file browser of the BookSense is used to navigate the content of the SD card, USB flash drive, or internal flashdisk (XT model). To access the file browser from any program of the BookSense, close any open books or files by pressing the cancel button. To navigate the files and folders, do the following:
Please note that if you are in the DAISY player, you cannot press the right arrow on a folder which contains the actual files which make up the DAISY book. This is because the BookSense regards a folder of this type as the actual book. Folders With Many ItemsIf you are inside a folder which contains a large number of items, pressing the up or down arrow repeatedly can get quite tedious. Especially if you are at the top of the list and you want to reach the 47th item. There are 2 ways of moving inside a folder which contains many items. Method 1To quickly move up or down in large lists, press the 1 and 4 buttons, the 2 and 5 buttons, or the 3 and 6 buttons. The 1 and 4 buttons move up or down 5 items at a time, the 2 and 5 buttons move up or down 10 items at a time, and the 3 and 6 buttons move to the top or bottom of the list. For example if you are in a folder which contains 65 items and you want to get to item 39, you can do the following:
Method 2To move to a specific item in large lists, press the number 8. When you do this, the BookSense prompts you for an item number to move to. using the numbers of the keypad, type the number of the item you want to move to. Then press the OK button when finished. For example if you are in a folder which contains 65 items and you want to get to item 47, you can do the following:
Additional File And Folder NavigationSome additional buttons and their functions follow:
Some of the buttons when pressed for 2 seconds perform other functions. Please refer to the user manual for a complete list of all the buttons and their functions. Navigating While Reading Or Playing A File/BookWhen you press the play button on a file, folder, or book, the BookSense will load it into memory. When a book is reading or an audio file is playing, you are no longer in the browsing mode of the BookSense. Instead, you are in the playing or reading mode. This means that the arrows and numbers have different functions than the ones listed above. Moving Within A File/BookPressing the up or down arrows determine what the left and right arrows will do. For example if you are listening to music, your choices are; 1 track, 5 tracks, first or last track, time interval, and time. So if you want the left and right arrows to move backward or forward 5 tracks at a time, press the down arrow until you hear, 5 tracks. If you want to move forward or backward within the file you are listening to, press up or down arrow until you hear, time. Then the left and right arrows move by time within the same track. When the time option is selected with the up or down arrows, the default movement in the media player is 5 seconds. To change this increment, press the up arrow until you hear, time interval. Next press the left or right arrows to choose a time interval. Once you have selected a time interval, press the down arrow to reach the time setting again. Now when you press the left or right arrows, you will move in the time interval you selected. Please note: If you close the file or book, the time interval will be reset back to the default of 5 seconds. Depending on the type of file or book which is currently playing, pressing the up and down arrows offer different choices. For example in the document reader, instead of 1 track, 5 tracks, and so forth, there are choices such as page, line, paragraph, sentence, and word. In the case of the DAISY reader, there are choices such as heading and phrase. Regardless of what choices are available, the left and right arrows act according to what is selected with the up or down arrow. Some additional buttons and their functions follow:
The numbers 7, 8, and 9 have different functions depending on whether you are in the media player, DAISY player, or document reader. In addition, some of the buttons when pressed for 2 seconds perform other functions. Please refer to the user manual for a complete list of all the buttons and their functions. Using The MenusThe menu system of the BookSense is navigated similar to the file browser. When you open the menu, press the up or down arrows to choose a menu item. Then press the right arrow to activate the item or dialog you chose. As you navigate the menu of the BookSense, you may hear things like pull down or dialog. In the case of a pull down, it means there is a submenu with additional menu items to choose from. In the case of a dialog, it means that a dialog box will open which has specific settings you can adjust via other controls such as edit boxes and combo boxes. Regardless of whether you are in a menu or dialog box, press the up or down arrows to move to the other items or choices. Edit BoxesWhen you are in an edit box, press the left and right arrows to review the contents. If the BookSense is expecting numerical input, press the appropriate number buttons to input the desired value. For example if you are in the time and date dialog box and you are in the month edit box, type the number of the month you want. If it is December, press the numbers 1 and 2. Once you are finished, press the up or down arrow to move to another item in the dialog box. If you make a mistake, press the cancel button which will erase the mistyped entry just like the backspace key does on a PC. Press the Cancel button for at least 2 seconds to clear all contents of the edit box. Pressing the cancel button on an empty edit box will cancel out the dialog box completely. Combo BoxesA combo box is a list of predetermined items to choose from. Since pressing the up and down arrows moves between different menu items or choices, the left and right arrows must be pressed instead. For example if you are in the power saving dialog box, the predetermined values of when the BookSense will turn itself off due to inactivity are selected via a combo box. Press the left or right arrow to select the choice you want, then press the OK button to accept the option and close the menu. Saving or Canceling Your ChangesIn all cases, pressing the cancel button will close the menu without saving any of the modified entries. Pressing the OK button will close the menu after saving any changes which have been made. Please refer to the user manual for a complete list of all the buttons and their functions. Menu Example: Setting The Date And TimeThis example shows how to navigate the menus of the BookSense in order to change the time and date. For this example, the time and date set will be July 24, 2010, 1:47 PM.
At this point the BookSense is in the Set date and time dialog box and it has indicated that the first edit box is for the 2 digits of the month. It will not really say, blah, but instead say the value of the current number in the month edit box. Press the up and down arrow buttons to hear the current values for the various date and time settings. If the date and time has never been set, these values are most likely incorrect. Beginning with the month edit box, do the following to set the date and time to our example of July 24, 2010, 1:47 PM.
Feel free to press the down arrow repeatedly to review the entries you made in the steps above. Of course, if you like, you can substitute the numbers for the real date and time instead of using this example. After verifying that everything is the way you want, press the OK button to save your settings. Once finished, press the clock button to hear the BookSense announce the current date and time.
