GWKB1104 : Connecting And Disconnecting The BookSense To and From The PC

Product: BookSense
Author: Raul Gallegos
Date Added: 07/20/2009
Last Modified: 04/05/2010

This Knowledge Base article applies to both the standard BookSense (ruby red) and the BookSense XT (off white) using firmware version 1.0 or newer. Also, when this article refers to the BookSense drive, it can either be the flashdisk of the BookSense XT, or the SD card inside the BookSense.

Connecting The BookSense To The PC

To connect the BookSense to the PC, do the following:

  1. If the BookSense is not already powered on, do so by pressing the play/pause power button for at least 2 seconds.
  2. Using the long USB cable provided, connect the small end of the cable to the USB mini-port of the BookSense.
  3. Using the bigger end of the USB cable, connect it to an available USB port of the PC.

The first time you do this, Windows will install the necessary USB drivers it needs to communicate with the BookSense. In many cases, the autoplay dialog box will open, asking you what you want to do for this drive. If you choose to use the autoplay dialog box, press the letter "o" until the "Open folder to view files" option is selected, then press enter. Otherwise you will need to find the BookSense drive from "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Vista/Win7). While the BookSense is connected to the PC, you cannot power it off. It also does not matter if you power on the BookSense before or after connecting it to the PC. If you have an SD card inserted into the BookSense XT, you will have 2 drives available when you connect it to the PC.

Disconnecting The BookSense From The PC

To disconnect the BookSense from the PC, do the following:

  1. Close all folder windows.
  2. Press Windows-B to focus the system tray.
  3. Press the letter "s" until "Safely Remove Hardware" is displayed.
  4. Press the space bar once to open the context list of devices which can be removed.
  5. Press Up or Down arrow until the correct drive letter for your BookSense is displayed. (In the case of the BookSense XT, 2 drive letters will be shown in the same menu item.)
  6. Press the enter key to select the menu item.

If Windows has finished writing data to the BookSense drive and if all the explorer windows of the BookSense drive are closed, a message box informing you that it is now safe to remove the drive should display. If any other message is displayed, you may have to repeat the above steps until it is safe to remove the BookSense from the PC. There are times when some program in your PC may see the BookSense and then safely remove hardware won't work. The Audible manager is known for doing this. As long as you are sure that all files have been copied to or from the drive, you should be able to disconnect it from the PC without problems.

Identifying The Correct Drive to Work With

The BookSense flashdisk (XT model) will have the label "BookSense" which can make it easier to identify in "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Vista/Win7). However the SD card you use may not have a label at all. You can do the following to give your SD card a label. Before you begin this process, be sure you insert the SD card to be labeled into your computer, either through an onboard SD Card Reader, or a USB connected Card Reader which is removable. There are also some computers with removable modular components with card readers in them. You should know which type you have.

  1. Navigate to "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" )Vista/Win7).
  2. Arrow to the removable drive where your SD Card is located. You may have to check around to see where the SD card is if you have several drives in use.
  3. When the SD card’s drive letter is highlighted, press the F2 key on your computer keyboard. This is the rename Function key.
  4. Type the name that you wish to call your SD Card. For example: "My_Card".
  5. Press enter.

Now your sd card will be customized with the name of your choice. Please note that there is a limit of eleven (11) characters when naming a drive. Also, you are naming the card itself, not the drive letter. This means that you can have different names for your various SD cards.
