Product: Sense Nav

This article gives instructions on quickly getting started with GW Sense Navigation. For specific details of the program, please refer to the GW Sense Navigation manual located in the "Docs" folder of the SenseNav CD or memory card.

Supported notetakers

GW Sense Navigation (SenseNav) is currently available for the Braille Sense Plus, Voice Sense, and Braille Sense (Original) notetakers. Since the functionality is the same for these three notetakers, the term "Sense notetaker" will be used to refer to them. If there is something specific to one or the other, it will be noted accordingly.

Using the correct firmware

To successfully run GW Sense Navigation, the correct firmware must be used. Pressing SPACE-V from the main program menu will give the date and version of the firmware. In order for GW Sense navigation to function properly, the firmware must be at least version 1.21 dated April 22, 2008 (Voice Sense), or version 5.01 dated April 22, 2008 (Braille Sense). If the firmware date is earlier than this, it must be upgraded. Upgrading the firmware will be the first step in troubleshooting when contacting technical support. To upgrade the firmware please follow the steps given in Knowledgebase article KB1028.

Pairing the GPS receiver

In order to successfully use SenseNav in a live environment, the Sense notetaker must be paired with a GPS receiver.
[Please note: The Braille Sense does not have built-in Bluetooth capabilities, so a compatible Bluetooth adapter such as the Princeton(PTM-UBT3S) USB dongle will need to be inserted into the USB port. The following steps assume this adapter or a similar one has already been inserted.]

Steps for pairing the receiver and the Sense notetaker
  1. Turn on both the GPS receiver and the Sense notetaker.
  2. For Voice Sense and Braille Sense Plus, Enable Bluetooth with BACKSPACE-DOTS-3-4-5-6. The message, "Bluetooth on," will be displayed. If Bluetooth is already enabled, this hot key will turn it off.
  3. Press F1, L to open the Bluetooth Manager. The Sense notetaker will immediately begin scanning for available Bluetooth devices in range.
  4. After several seconds the Sense notetaker will display a list of available Bluetooth devices. [Please note: If multiple GPS receivers are found, there will not be an accurate way of determining which is the correct receiver.
  5. Press Up or Down arrow to select the GPS receiver then press ENTER to begin scanning for its services. When the service list is displayed, press ENTER on ActiveSync" to establish a connection.
  6. Once the active sync connection has been established, close the Bluetooth manager with SPACE-Z.

At this point the Sense notetaker and the GPS receiver know about each other and will work together when they are in range. [Please note: If the Sense notetaker is ever reset back to its factory defaults from a revive or a firmware upgrade, it will need to be paired with the GPS receiver again. Simply follow the steps above to establish the pair again.]

Launching and configuring GW Sense Navigation for the first time

The first time that GW Sense Navigation is launched, a few items will need to be configured. These items include the location of the maps and the GPS receiver connection type.

Installing the memory card and launching for the first time
  1. Power on both the GPS receiver and the Sense notetaker. [Please note: for best performance, we recommend that the GPS receiver be powered on a couple of minutes prior to launching GW Sense Navigation.]
  2. Press F1 on the Sense notetaker to focus the main program menu. The notetaker will display, "File manager (f)."
  3. Insert the supplied memory card into the appropriate slot and wait for the confirmation sound to play.
  4. For the Voice Sense or Braille Sense Plus, Press BACKSPACE-DOTS-3-4-5-6 until it displays, "Bluetooth on." For the Braille Sense Original, insert the Bluetooth adapter so that it displays, "Bluetooth card inserted."
  5. Press V or arrow down to GW Sense Navigation then press ENTER to launch it.

When SenseNav launches for the first time, the map data location and the GPS receiver type will not be set.

Map and POI data configuration
  1. Press ENTER-O. GW Sense Navigation will display, "Select map and POI folder dialog box."
  2. By default, the root of the first CF card will be searched. If your map data is located in a CF card, use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to choose a map folder. If your map data is located elsewhere such as on an SD card, press the BACKSPACE key until the Sense notetaker displays the name of the card. Press ENTER on the card and arrow to the map folder you want to use, but do not press ENTER on it.
  3. Press SPACE to select the map folder, then press ENTER and GW Sense navigation will load the maps contained in the selected map folder.

[Please note: The authorization key must either be located in the root of the memory card, or inside the map folder itself. If it is not, the program will not function. By default, the authorization key is already present in the root of the memory card, so this should not be an issue as long as the key has not been removed or renamed.]

Once the maps have loaded successfully, the GPS receiver connection type will need to be configured.

Configuring the GPS receiver connection type
  1. From within GW Sense Navigation press BACKSPACE-G. The Sense notetaker will display, "GPS options dialog box."
  2. The default GPS receiver is set to none. Press SPACE until GW Sense Navigation displays, "Bluetooth (Active Sync)."
  3. Press ENTER and GW Sense Navigation will look for the GPS receiver and connect to it.

Once the connection has been established pressing V will toggle between Live and Virtual Navigation. Pressing G will give the GPS receiver accuracy.

[Please note: If there is no connection after a minute, press ENTER-R to reconnect. Also, the GPS receiver needs to already have been paired with the Sense notetaker prior to communicating with GW Sense Navigation.]

Launching GW Sense Navigation after initial configuration

This section describes typical launching of GW Sense Navigation after the initial setup. After any initial pairing of the receiver and configuration of GW Sense Navigation has been performed, the following steps give a quick list of how to quickly establish a live navigation connection.

  1. Power on both the GPS receiver and the Sense notetaker. [Please note: for best performance, we recommend that the GPS receiver be powered on a couple of minutes prior to launching GW Sense Navigation.]
  2. Press F1 on the Sense notetaker to focus the main program menu. The Sense notetaker will display, "File manager (f)."
  3. Insert the supplied memory card into the appropriate slot and wait for the confirmation sound to play.
  4. Press V or arrow down to GW Sense Navigation then press ENTER to launch it.

Please note: Depending on the number of maps which are loaded, GW Sense Navigation could take up to one minute while all the data is loaded. During this time the Sense notetaker will be silent. The preceeding steps are the typical ones used for every-day use.
