This guide will give instructions on backing up and restoring the data of the Braille Sense Plus, Voice Sense, and Braille Sense Original.

The Backup/Restore utility

The "Backup/restore" utility is only used for backing up or restoring the Sense notetaker settings. This utility does not backup or restore the actual files contained in the flashdisk of the Sense notetaker. Backing up the settings is beneficial in cases where you want to quickly restore any program customizations after a firmware upgrade or after the Sense notetaker has been revived. Before you can backup or restore the Sense notetaker settings, you must first create a folder which will be used to keep the settings. Simply open the file manager and create the folder in the flashdisk. As an example, we will use a folder called "options".

Backing up the settings

The following steps will demonstrate how to backup all the Sense notetaker settings to a folder called "Options" located in the flashdisk.

  1. Press F1 to focus the main program menu.
  2. Press U (DOTS-1-3-6) then K (DOTS-1-3) to open the Backup and Restore utility.
  3. You will be in a list box of the different program settings. By default the global options will already be selected. Press F3 to focus the "Select all" button.
  4. Press ENTER on the "Select All" button so that the settings for all programs are chosen.
  5. Press F3. Then press ENTER on the "Backup" button. This will open the file browser so you can choose a folder to backup the settings in.
  6. For our example, we are using a folder called "Options" located in the flashdisk. To get to this folder, press ENTER on flashdisk. Then press SPACE-DOT-4 until the Sense notetaker displays the "Options" folder.
  7. Press SPACE to select the folder. Then press ENTER to begin the backup process.

The backup/restore utility will close once the settings have been backed up to the "Options" folder.

Restoring the settings

The following steps will demonstrate how to restore all the Sense notetaker settings from a folder called "Options" located in the flashdisk.

  5. Press F3 twice. Then press ENTER on the "Restore" button. This will open the file browser so you can choose a folder to restore from.
  6. For our example, we are using a folder called "Options" located in the flashdisk. To get to this folder, press ENTER on flashdisk. Then press SPACE-DOT-4 until the Sense notetaker displays the "Options" folder.
  7. Press SPACE to select the folder. Then press ENTER to begin the restore process.

The backup/restore utility will close once the settings have been restored from the "Options" folder.

Backing up the files of the Sense notetaker

To backup the files located in the flashdisk of the Sense notetaker, you will need to have a memory device such as a USB stick (thumb drive), SD card (secure digital card), or CF card (compact flash card) with sufficient storage space available. Insert or connect the memory device to the Sense notetaker and follow these steps.

  1. Press F1 to focus the main program menu.
  2. Press F (DOTS-1-2-4) to open the file manager.
  3. Press ENTER on the flashdisk to display all your files and folders.
  4. Press ENTER-A (DOT-1) to select all the contents of the flashdisk.
  5. Press ENTER-C (DOTS-1-4) to copy the contents to the clipboard.
  6. Press BACKSPACE once to display flashdisk.
  7. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to select the memory device you will be copying the files and folders to.
  8. Press ENTER to open the selected memory device.
  9. Press ENTER-V (DOTS-1-2-3-6) to paste the contents of the clipboard into the memory device.

Depending on the size of the files and folders of the flashdisk, the copying process may take some time. If you ever need to restore any of the files or folders from the memory device, simply copy them from it and paste them into the appropriate location in the flashdisk.
