Symptom: Sticky keys dialog comes up while using Windows Vista and you don’t want it to.

Cause: There are times when you might press the shift key five times in a row. Whether this is due to idle pressing of the key, or due to playing games. When this happens, the sticky keys dialog comes up asking you if you want to turn on sticky keys mode.

Solution: There is a way to make it so that this dialog does not come up. To do this, you must turn off the shortcuts from the Ease of Access Center (EAC) of Windows Vista.

  1. Press Control-ESC to open the start menu. In the box type “control panel" without the quotes, then press enter.
  2. Once Control Panel is opened, press the letter “e" until you hear, “Ease of Access Center." Once it is highlighted, press enter.
  3. Press tab until you get to the option, “Make the keyboard easier to use." In many cases this requires eleven presses of the tab key.
  4. Press enter here and you will hear, “Turn on mouse keys." You are now in the window where you will make the changes.
  5. Tab once to, “setup mouse keys." Press enter.
  6. Press alt-k then alt-s. This will toggle the keyboard shortcut check box and save the settings. You will be taken back to the previous Window.
  7. Tab three times to get to, “setup sticky keys." Press enter.
  8. Press alt-k then alt-s. This will toggle the keyboard shortcut check box and save the settings. You will be taken back to the previous Window.
  9. Press tab seven times to get to, “setup filter keys." Press enter.
  10. Press alt-k then alt-s. This will toggle the keyboard shortcut check box and save the settings. You will be taken back to the previous Window.
  11. The last setting to change is the toggle keys shortcut which is in this main window, unlike the previous ones. From here, press alt-k then alt-s. This will toggle the keyboard shortcut check box and save the settings. You will be taken back to the Ease of Access Window.
  12. Close the Ease of Access center.
