FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Blind Woman Gains Employment in Recession Thanks to Assistive Tech from GW Micro

Fort Wayne, Indiana (October 17, 2011) - There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the recession has had a significant impact on employment for everyone. Some people have been laid off, some have had hours cut back, and the struggle is just as evident for people with disabilities.

Tracy Rau, of Fort Wayne, IN was no exception to the poor economy when her job was downsized over a year ago. Tracy is completely blind and has been struggling to find a job ever since.

To be able to perform the job, Tracy required assistive technology from GW Micro (www.gwmicro.com). Using Window-Eyes, a screen reader for a computer running Windows, allows Tracy to read everything on the screen that a sighted person would see. In addition, Tracy uses the Readit Wand to capture print documents and then has Window-Eyes read the documents to her.

"Being gainfully employed is important for everyone in our society," said Dan Weirich, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for GW Micro. "Without the specialized technology that GW Micro creates, employment would not be a possibility for someone in Tracy's position."

GW Micro develops Window-Eyes in Fort Wayne, IN and has been doing business there for 21 years. Since its inception, the company has become global and stretches to more than 17 countries. According to Weirich, developing technology for blind and visually impaired consumers is something that takes a great deal of specialized knowledge and large amount of time and money in research and development. He noted that mainstream technology companies don't typically have the technical ability or knowledge on how to support blind and visually impaired customers. "Developing technology that enables our blind and visually impaired customers to enter the workforce is what GW Micro is all about," said Weirich.
