Problems Installing WE on a Laptop

Hello All:

I apologize in advance for the length of this e-mail. I've reported
this issue to GW Micro's Technical Support and gotten some good
suggestions, but wanted to place a message here to see if anyone has
experienced this problem and what you did to fix it.

I'm a long time Window-eyes user but have used it on desktop computers
exclusively. Just last week, however, my wife and I also purchased a
laptop computer. We bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 computer with 1GB of
RAM, Windows XP Home and a 60GB hard drive. It also has an ATI Radeon
Xpress 1150 Video card with 256MB of memory.

Here's the problem. When I got the laptop, I got it set up using
Narrator. Then, I tried installing my copy of Window-Eyes 6.0 on the
laptop. The first time, I selected install with speech. The WE CD ran
through part of its installation, then I got the message that the system
needed to be re-started so the installation could run with speech. I
selected to re-start the system, but when it came up again, I got a
message that window-eyes couldn't find my display drivers. The message
said this can be caused by the system being booted into VGA or Safe
modes. It asked me to check that Windows is booting normally. Thus
far, I can't see anything abnormal about how windows is being booted.
Also, the screen was almost completely dark except for a little bit of
white showing near the bottom of it and I got all kinds of warnings from
such programs as Dell Network Assistant and a help balloon about my
display settings being incorrect.

I tried finishing the install of Window-Eyes using Quick Install and it
would not work. I had to remove Window-Eyes and also re-install my
video card because when I removed window-eyes, I got a message that the
graphics settings in the display properties were incorrect and that the
system had been booted using the VGA driver. When it came up the first
time after removing WE, I had screen resolution at something like 800 by
600 and 4 bit color and I couldn't change these unless I uninstalled the
video card and forced Windows to re-detect it and install the drivers.

The same things happened when I chose to install without speech using
Narrator and then tried to re-start the system and use Window-Eyes.

My display drivers are the ATI drivers. According to the support
information which I accessed off the add/remove programs menu and the
display adapter properties which I got to from Device Manager, the
drivers have a date on them of September 22, 2006 and a version number
of 8.282.2.1. I didn't notice any newer drivers on Dell's support site.

Finally, I downloaded and installed a demo copy of JAWS Version 8.0 just
to see if it would run as I know that JAWS typically depends more on
video card support than Window-Eyes. JAWS 8.0 runs with no problems.

My questions are these. Has anyone else bought a Dell Inspiron Laptop
recently? If so, did you experience these same kinds of problems? How
did you fix them?

Again, I appreciate all of the help I've gotten from Mike Lawler at GW
Micro with this via e-mail. I just want to see what the other gurus on
this list can tell me about this.

Thanks,
