Re: Keyboard Layouts and Handling of Set FilesDate:
Fri, Oct 20, 2006 8:25:15 amActually, this is one of the new features of Window-Eyes 6.0 beta 1, and
it's pretty easy to do right now. Here are the steps:
1. Make a copy of the layout that you want to modify. For example, if
you want to use the default layout, but modify a few keys, make a copy
of c:\wineyes\default.txt, and call it c:\wineyes\mylayout.txt.
2. Open up the new c:\wineyes\mylayout.txt, change the hot keys that you
want to be different from the default layout, and then save the file.
3. Open up c:\wineyes\kblayout.ini. This file contains the list of
layouts that are displayed under the Window-Eyes, Keyboard, Layout menu.
You'll notice that the syntax is simply Layout Name=filename, so add
your own at the end (i.e. My Modified Default Layout=mylayout.txt).
4. Now it's just a matter of selecting your new keyboard layout from the
Window-Eyes Keyboard menu. When you access that menu, you'll notice a
new entry called My Modified Default Layout. If you press enter on it,
your layout will be modified with your own custom settings, and
afterward the My Modified Default Layout menu item will be checked. If
you want to switch back to the default layout (or any other layout), you
can do so knowing that you'll still be able to switch back to your
modified layout at any time.
You can also share your mylaout.txt, and kblayout.ini files with other
Window-Eyes users so that they can experience your custom keyboard
layouts as well.
Eventually we'll add UI to make this feature even easier to use, but
it's still possible to do now with just a little bit of editing.

Hello all,
I am slightly unhappy with the way that keyboard layout switching is
handled. I know that this is the way that Window-Eyes is designed from
the core but there are some problems with the current interface. I
shall stand corrected if any of these experiences are incorrect. I have
noticed that, if I have made some changes to my keyboard layout (such as
changed the refresh keystroke to insert+esc), change to the JAWS layout,
then back, I lose my changes. To my understanding, the keyboard
changing is done by going in and changing the files that have in them
the keyboard assignments in the set files. I know that Doug mentioned
doing some interface revamping in the future and I hope that this is on
his list as well as modifying the system so that it is not necessary to
edit files and convert them to sets manually to get global options. The
way that things are handled from the core can be frustrating at times.
Window-Eyes is still a great product and I admire the stability and
responsiveness especially.
