I actually did verify it was off and I turned it on and then off again.
The reading of the menus really does come and go although it seems to
come more consistently when I first open tbird and then goes away
eventually.
The other 2 items eem to be really inconsistent.

That may be the case, but I have seen Thunderbird re-enable it
from time to time (especially after the program has recovered from
a serious crash). it couldn't hurt to verify that the pane is
disabled under View -> Layout either way.<br>
