The option Steve is referring to is not a checkbox, it is just a menu
option where one of the items is checked. So are you sure you have
"Always notify me when app updates are available" checked? If you do
and just misspoke about it being a checkbox, the only other option is
each individual app also controls whether it should check for updates on
startup or such. So it is possible they are set to not check which
would cause the same effect.
