This discussion bemuses me (some would argue not hard to achieve). Is
the idea behind the discussion to have no gap between paragraphs so the
user presses Enter twice to create the space? If so, this is very poor
practice. If not, I've missed something and seek clarification.

The whole concept of using styles is that the style looks after the
formatting. My standard setup is to have 0pt before the paragraph and
12pt after it. Pressing Enter once then creates two paragraphs with a
suitable visual gap between them. Given that ctrl-up and ctrl-down
takes you to previous and next paragraphs respectively, there is no need
to identify paragraph boundaries with blank lines. Heading styles have
increased spacing before and after them so, again, there is no need to
use multiple Enters.

Especially when the file is to be used for such purposes as PDF, Braille
or DAISY conversion, multiple presses of the Enter key is most
undesirable. Word 2007 offers some very nice facilities for working
with styles. For people who are serious about document layout, it is
important that they are used.

Hi Peter,

I cannot duplicate the focus problem you are having, so it must be
specific to your machine.

Although some writers may prefer this style, some don't. This article
provides you with a way to turn it off, because you cannot delete the
blank line manually, since it never gains focus.

I get a lot of requests from people asking how to turn it off, so now
they know.

GW Micro just added an article to its Knowledge Base entitled: GWKB1099
: Changing Spacing and Styles in Word 2007. Here's a better and simpler
approach.

Follow these steps to return Word 2007 to the Word 2003 paragraph font
type and size, inter-line space within a paragraph, and no blank line
after a paragraph:

1. Launch the Word 2007 program.

You display a blank document.

2. Pres in succession Alt, H, G.

You display the Change Styles menu. The top item labeled Style Set has
keyboard bocus.

3. Press the Enter key.

A list of Style Sets appears.

4. Move onto the Word 2003 Style Set (near the bottom of the list) with
the vertical Arrow keys and press the Enter key.

You return to the blank document.

5. Again, pres in succession Alt, H, G.

Again, you display the Change Styles menu. The top item Style Set has
keyboard bocus.

6. Move onto the item labeled Set as Default and press the Enter key.

The Word 2003 paragraph style will be used from now on.

Remark: After the 6th step, Window-Eyes 7.01 looses keyboard focus; you
need to press Alt + Tab repeatedly to get back to the document.

Comment: Most professional writers do include a blank line at the end
of a paragraph as part of the paragraph style. Then they don't need to
press the Enter key twice at the end of every paragraph. (Word will
throw away this extra line went not needed.)
