Backing up is precautionary much like buying insurance on your home or car
or health.
Hopefully, you won't have to use it; but if you need to, it's there.
That's is why MSFT suggests backing up prior to the install.
Odds favor nothing happening with the installation of sp3; but if
something goes wrong, you'll appreciate
the back-up.
