Well, what ever is supposed to be wrong with Vista I haven't happened upon
yet. I have only had this PC since early September, so perhaps one of these
days in the not too distant future, I'll come in here and the whole box will
be on fire or something.

When the day is done, the end user is the one to decide what works
for them in the most comfortable way, so if it is Vista, it is Vista. If
it's XP, it's XP. My only point to my messages were that a vast majority
of users were not making the Vista choice for both general and specific
reasons. Where my brother works, there is a standing order from
corporate headquarters that No Machines ordered can include Vista and a
downgrade option has to be part of any purchase if Vista is the only OS
available. I do have to disagree that this is a lot different than 2001.
Yes, XP surely did not get off with a bang, but Vista has been a
technical and financial disaster for Microsoft by a far comparison
according to the Wall Street Journal and several other sources. XP, at
least, was working reasonably well within six months of launch with a
patch. I am being told that the next patch for Vista is still al long
ways off from fixing major issues, but that, I am sure, will be seen for
sure next year. At some point, I have no doubt things will improve, yet,
again, personally, I'll wait until that occurs.

Hi. I agree here, and I use Vista . Let's step back a little
though. Instead of looking at this in November of 2007, let's look at in
February of 2001. Change Vista to XP and the comments are pretty much
the same. Basically when a new operating system comes out, it's going to
have problems. Vista is no different. So, if you and everyone looks at
it like this, everyone can have a better appreciation for reality. If
you can upgrade and you want to, then go for it. Window-Eyes still
supports XP home and XP pro so, the screen reader is not a factor. You
basically need to decide for yourselves if the benefits of a new
operating system outweigh the problems associated with it. Then there
are the new machines now-a- days from big companies like HP, Gateway, and
Dell. In most cases you have no choice as to the operating system you
choose.

OK, I'm done with my rant .

Ray's Home said the following on 11/13/2007 3:12 PM:
Might I add to John's post too that a UK computer magazine surveyed
more than 800 PC users, and more than a third have no intention of
upgrading to Vista. Not only have bugs and things like responsiveness
to be sorted, but also many feel there isn't enough bang for the bucks
either. (Remember that many will have to upgrade hardware, as I
would, to use anything other than Vista Basic.)
Another issue that's vexing me big time is Vista's disabling of
line-out recording. (This is happening under XP too as Microsoft are
smuggling in drivers to disable line out and digital out on many
soundcards. This really is a restriction too far. I use my computer
a lot for audio work, sometimes copying out material I own my self, or
sometimes from Uk radio, which the BBC is very tolerant of being a
public service broadcaster. I shall do all in my power to avoid this
obnoxious dictatorial behaviour of multi-nationals and their
organisations. (I' don't share stuff on the net, and never will.)
More on-topic, some do like some of the navigation facilities in
Vista, and its not without its ironies that access tech users are
pleased enough with Vista simply because SCREEN READERS TURN OFF MANY
OF THE FEATURES THAT GIVE SO MUCH TROUBLE TO MAINSTREAM USERS. I
believe Window-Eyes would be the most hassel-free way of using Vista
of all the screen readers.
End by saying that it isn't for nothing I'm looking seriously at the
Mac now. Of course, being Intel machines , they will run Windows,
either dual boot, or virtualised. Window-Eyes will continue to be my
screen reader under that arrangement. I'm not a 'born again' sort of
person who looks to switching entirely to the Mac. (Might even look
to Linux if it preserves my conscientious recording of on-line radio
material.
Sorry for the rant and rambling nature of this message, but seems
change is being forced on me, and if I can help it, not in the
direction that the media industries or MS wants to dictate to me.
Cheers,

I guess the real question is where aren't the problems
documented. Seriously, just do a google search for Windows Vista and
there are plenty of articles, blogs and other sources that speak of
numerous issues. Obviously, not every user in the world is having
them and Window-Eyes has solidly dealt with them, but I tend to stick
to what is the school of thought when it is so entirely prevalent in
the technology world. XP gets the job done and I find no need or
desire to upgrade. And, yes, as someone else mentioned, many
companies, including Dell, now offer Vista downgrades because market
forces have provoked such a need.

Personally, and this is not in an effort to start any list
controversy or debate, but I have too many friends in the IT world
who
have advised staying away from Vista for a while. Yes, I know of a
few folks and I'm sure there are people using it effectively, but
body
of evidence to the contrary out there is far too overwhelming to
ignore. I have a problem with an OS that requires turning off
features simply to get it to work acceptably well. Additionally,
the
list of associated problems, which are well documented even by
Microsoft, give me serious pause to think about jumping from XP any
time in the near future. However, it is, of course, just my
personal
opinion.

Hi,
Just my 2 cents, but I don't know why anyone would upgrade XP to
Vista when
most savvy computer users are downgrading new vista machines to XP.

Yes. And the different flavors of Windows Vista don't take a lot
more ram
than the ones lower on the ladder. If you don't use Aero you'll be
fine
without any more memory, unless you're doing video editing or
something.
