Just to let everybody know, this isn't purely a Dell issue. We recently received two new HP 17 inch laptops and even though they were brand new systems when I went to Windows update there were over 60 updates necessary. Then I looked and these new systems still were using Adobe Reader 6.0, and a number of other software packages were installed on the machine as demos that were at least two years old.

To make matters worse when you go to their driver downloads pages sometimes it is really not clear exactly which drivers are needed for a particular model of a system or they may list several different drivers for the same model system with little or no clear definition of which one is the one you need for your system. I recently rebuilt a 4 month old Dell system because Windows was having some serious problems. When you looked at the driver files for that system on the Dell website it listed 3 completely different wireless network card drivers. Of course, I got the right ones on the third try.

Marvin. This is exactly it. The problems we've seen with ATI cards are not the graphic adapter itself, but rather the drivers are not the updated ones. This is not a bad reflection on Dell necessarily, due to the fact that many of these machines are masproduced. So, even if you order a new machine in June, you may get drivers which were out in December of last year.

All the best.

Hi. The Dell desktop with an ATI Radeon 1600 with XP Media Center works like a champ. There may be certain mobile chip sets that have problems. So, don't write ATI off totally. It's also possible that the drivers Dell provides for the graphics card are the source of the problem. I believe I read a while back that GW was working with ATI but that was a while ago. Hopefully Dell is keeping up with ATI
s updates for their products.

It would seem so. I know I'll ask what kind of graphics card is in any computer I am considering buying in the future, and if it is an ATI, I'll shun it like the plague.

What's troubling is that if I remember correctly GW has always stated that Window Eyes does not depend on what Graphics card is installed to work properly. Maybe this has changed with the Vista OS.

Something else that would be nice is if, since there are a number of blind users of DELL computers, maybe GW MICRO could somehow work out something with DELL where they could have a contact person in sales that would know about screen readers so they could help blind customers when buying a computer. Also, maybe someone in support too that could understand problems that a screen user might have when using a DELL computer. Just a thought.

It would be great for someone on the GW staff to address this problem. Maybe give us some things to advoid when purchasing a notebook computer with Vista installed and using WE 6.1.
