Re: Usability of windoweyes with the jaws keyboard layout. Should it stay or should it go

That's a tough one. On the one hand, a rough version of the JFW keyboard
layout is being used is often misinterpreted as Wineyes will act just like
JFW. Of course, we all know this isn't the case, but sometimes I wonder if a
JFW keyboard layout doesn't stagnate people actually learning those parts of
Wineyes that are unique to Wineyes. On the other hand though, it can be a
nice assistant in the adjustment process. I'd say the approach your
girlfriend took was best; accepting that the JFW keyboard layout didn't
simplify things a whole lot in her particular case and so abandon it. But it
is there, and leaving it as an option will probably always be a good idea.

stay or should it go

Hi all,

Am only putting this forward as a point of disgussion. Based on experience
and part cureosity.

Before I go any further, I will state that I firmly believe that in order to
learn to use and to efficiently use a programme, it's always best to learn
it in it's own environment and not to get it to simulate another. Keymapping
is fine on an individual basis because you can do what you like with it.

Anyway, on to my point and reason for putting this out.

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend came to stay with me. She's a jaws user, she
has jaws both at home and at work. She wanted to use my machine. So I
thought that I could make it easier by putting the layout to a jaws layout
for her. After all she's used to that, and I didn't really expect her to
have to learn window eyes, purely because she's not using it other than at
my apartment. So I switched the keyboard layout to the jaws layout. I tested
it with a couple of keystrokes, because up until a couple months ago, I was
an acomplished jaws user. I switched across because I use the internet on a
very regular basis but ever since jaws 7, I think that internet support has
really started to lack for various reasons including slowing down on certain
pages, which subsiquently would cause my machine to freez up if not
sometimes even go as far as crashing it. It was coming up to my SMA renewal
anyway so I decided to shop around and look. I saw win eyes tried it and it
worked far better than I expected it to. So I jumped ship. Anyway that's by
the by. I put the jaws keyboard layout on for my girlfriend. Pretty soon
into her using the pc there was already starting to be confusion. Some of
the jaws keystrokes weren't acting or where they should be. For example. In
we, you press c to get to the first part of a form field. In jaws you press
f. she tried that with jaws, it didn't work. It was using the we command for
formfields. Also, as I expected, we was using it's own terminology whilst
using keystrokes. Whether it be the jaws or we layout. Which is of course to
be expected. She soon asked for me to change the layout back because it
really wasn't working as it should.

So, has anybody on here ever tried the jaws layout? If so, what do you
think, should it stay or should it go? If so why.

I personally think it should go because like I've already stated, it created
more confusion than was necessary. Also in addition, you can't be expected
to learn effectively to use a programme when it's not opperating within it's
own environment and simulating another. It just doesn't work. What do you
the user have to relate what you are learning to. If you read something from
the we manual, then you have to convert it to a jaws keystroke, and even
then that keystroke may not even work.
