 RE: using the manual

No. I'm not saying that. I could be wrong, but I would bet
that most people "have"!, tried to read it in some way. Some of you
guys are assuming that most people have "not"tried to read it! I'm just
saying that there's no perfect answer.

Sandra,

I don't know if there is really an impass or the recognition of a
problem that is hard to solve. If you are saying that we need to accept
that most people won't read the manual, what do you feel is a reasonable
solution?

I think to a lot of us we get confused. I know I do. Things like
mouse pointers. I don't know how things should be set. Should you
check something or uncheck it. I use that for example. I know there's
no
perfect answer or a perfect way to do it all.
In any case. Have a great day.

Sandra,

Oh, I agree that many sighted people don't read manuals either. That
shouldn't be justification, though. Just because someone doesn't do
something, doesn't mean they shouldn't be doing it. You could also
argue, how many sighted consumer products have a forum like GW-Info,
where you have direct communication between tech support and even high
ranking personnel and developers at the manufacturer? Few if any.

To me, saying that you shouldn't have to read the manual because so
many sighted people don't, is like saying that you shouldn't use the
crosswalk because so many sighted people jaywalk.

And I am by no means advocating against helping people. On the
contrary, I enjoy helping people as much as I can, particularly when it

comes to transitioning to products I consider superior to the accepted
standards. I just think that the manual should be the first course of
action. Then, by all means, you should ask questions if you're still
lost. I only take issue with those people, and there are a tremendous
number of them, who don't even try to use the manual. Whether they are

sighted or not is irrelevant.

I should also clarify that I certainly don't expect everyone to
memorize the manual. I look up certain things in it from time to time
that I don't use on a daily basis. But, that's the point. Use it as a

reference tool to find what you need. Don't read it cover to cover and

expect to remember it all. I don't think anyone is saying that.

Well Josh. How many sighted people really read every manual,
every
detail of it, on everything they buy. And, remember all of
it!?
Most
sighted people I know would not except the answer that "it's in
the
book!" Yes, we need to do something for ourselves. But!,
most!,
people I know need help. There's nothing wrong with giving
that to
them!

Hello all,

Unfortunately, though, you're giving the majority a benefit of
the doubt
that only a handful actually deserve. I've worked professionally
as a
vendor for access technology, a trainer for said technology, a
Jaws
script writer for Marriott International, and now a software
developer,
among other things. A huge number of people simply don't even
try with
manuals or documentation. They won't search it, they won't read
it,
often they won't even open the file.

Of course, you have those people who have genuinely tried, and
for those
we should be patient and helpful, and I'm all for that. It is
for those
people that this list is meant in part.

I also have to say that human interaction isn't a viable
argument in
this discussion, as a couple of people have posed. Reading
instructions
in an email copy and pasted from the manual is no different than
reading
it in the manual yourself. Email isn't, really, human
interaction. Phone
conversations and face-to-face discussions are, and email, alas,
doesn't
fit the bill.

Lisa said it so well. She expresses my sentiments
almost to a tee.
There is a reason someone may pose their question on the
list; and one

of these is the manual struck out for them.
And it doesn't matter that the manual actually has the
answer as they
didn't find it there.
