Jared,

If this is a new installation of GWC, then it will have no way to tell if a voicemail or other incoming message has been read. Two things you can do to stop this from happening in the future is to go through your old voicemails and delete the ones you no longer wish to keep, and also uncheck the handle unread events checkbox in Options/Startup & Shutdown.
