disconnect/connect. That usually will clear things up. It used to work as

wherein even though it says it, it isn't appearing to do it, lol.

It should say it when you are signed in, since you have your username and

Like Barb, as of late I've had to go to tools, options, chat and then press
disconnect and connect. It does then say chat connected but interestingly,
it says that when I sign in too. As of late, however, doesn't seem like it
is working until you do the disconnect/connect thing.
