Word Advanced Features 3.6.8
by Chip OrangeEnhances the MS Word experience by speaking advanced paragraph formatting information, table column/row titles, footnotes and endnotes (numbers and their text), form field prompts, document line numbers, document comments, and shading colors. Now adds a feature to analyze your document for unwanted formatting changes. Also changes the speaking of the status bar so it's more understandable, and tells you when tracked changes, macro recording, extended selection, or overtype modes are enabled (Word 2003 only). Also restricts the speaking of verbosity text attributes to the document window only.
(Note: requires the full version of Word; not the "starter" version, nor the version used as the Outlook message editor).
The information is only spoken as it changes, and the formatting information only when the "format alert" option is enabled, or the app preference settings "Always Speak Format Changes" is checked which forces it to be spoken.
The app offers many ways to determine which row and/or column is a "header", and so may be spoken. These include using the Word "header" attribute for table rows, specially named bookmarks which identify table header rows and/or columns, and forcing the top row or the first column to be treated as a "header".
Optionally prevents the pressing of the tab key (when in the bottom-right cell of a table) from adding a new blank row to the table.
The footnotes/endnotes and document comments are read in their proper place in the document text, and have options for controlling whether the numbers and/or the associated text are read. All of the "special" info such as table headers and footnote text are optionally read in a slightly different voice for easy identification.
Form field prompts are spoken where there is no prompt defined for the field; it is found by examining the document, looking in neighboring table cells or lines, for appropriately positioned text in the document. The app also stops the speaking of unwanted additional information when tabbing to an editbox field.
Document line numbers are optionally spoken.
The script adds two hotkeys for quick document navigation by page, and a third brings up a dialog showing a list of text boxes and other shapes which have embedded text, and the user is able to go to any of these text blocks.
Three hotkeys exist for creating a place mark in the document (without modifying the document), for returning to the mark later, and for selecting the text between the mark and the current position.
The app announces the status of page headers and footers, the number of shapes with embedded text, the number of frames surrounding text, and maximizes the document window at the time a document is opened.
Finally, it works around some bugs in WE so that when resizing the font for a selected block of text (with commands such as control left bracket), the proper font size is spoken, and a second bug where read right of cursor does not find the cursor position properly, and a third where WE doesn't read the number for a numbered paragraph which has a style separator, and a forth where WE doesn't speak a hard page break.
